CLRA has started the Kathleen McCarthy scholarship program for our High School Club Team rowers and coxswains (steersmen), beginning with the 2020 spring season. Kathleen was a strong believer in having young people participate in sports and other activities. She championed youth throughout her life showing particular care and concern for those experiencing a variety of personal difficulties. Kathleen became a member of the CLRA Master’s Program several years ago. She participated in a summer Learn to Row session and almost immediately fell in love with the sport. Kathleen soon began competing in fall regattas and not long after, joined the CLRA Board of Directors and was elected board president during her tenure. Kathleen was instrumental to the success of our annual Rock ‘n’ Row fund raiser.

Tragically, during the early summer of 2019, illness struck Kathleen down much too early. One of her wishes was that a scholarship program be established to help youth whose families struggle financially so that they would have an opportunity to row with the CLRA High School Club Team. Memorial contributions and proceeds from a fund raising event were pooled to create the scholarship fund.

Beginning with the 2020 season, CLRA will now offer scholarships to those in financial need. Candidates need to complete and submit an application to the Scholarship Committee. Entries will be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee; all names and information provided will be kept confidential. Entries must be submitted by end of 1st week in March. Applicants will be notified of the results by the Committee. Any scholarship awarded will cover dues, and US Rowing Basic Membership dues or a portion thereof.

A separate $100 security deposit and any travel expenses are the responsibility of the athlete’s family.

For the MS Word form, email as directed on the application. If the SurveyMonkey is the choice, the form is automatically sent to the committee. Completed applications should be submitted by end of 1st week in March.
